Meaningful Change Begins With Deeper Understanding

At Houston Therapy, we believe meaningful change often begins with understanding yourself more fully.

People rarely fit neatly into a diagnosis, treatment protocol, or list of symptoms. Anxiety may be connected to perfectionism. Relationship difficulties may reflect patterns that developed much earlier in life. ADHD can affect self-esteem, work, motivation, and relationships in ways that are easy to overlook. Depression may involve not only mood, but also identity, loss, relationships, or a sense of meaning.

Our therapists take the time to understand the whole person.

That means considering symptoms and practical concerns while also exploring the emotional, relational, developmental, cultural, and psychological factors that may be shaping someone's experience.

The goal is not simply to feel better in the moment. Whenever possible, we want therapy to help people under

stand themselves, develop greater emotional flexibility, improve their relationships, and create changes that last.

Our Approach to Therapy

Houston Therapy was built around the idea that high-quality psychotherapy should be both thoughtful and clinically rigorous.

Our clinicians draw from a range of evidence-based, evidence-informed, and depth-oriented approaches. Depending on the individual and the problem being addressed, treatment may include structured strategies, behavioral interventions, emotional exploration, relationship-focused work, or a combination of approaches.

Our therapists have training in approaches including:

We do not believe every client needs the same kind of therapy. Treatment should be based on the person, the problem, the available evidence, the therapeutic relationship, and the goals that bring someone into treatment.

Depth-Oriented & Insight-Based Therapy

Many people come to therapy because they are anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, burned out, or struggling in their relationships.

Others are functioning relatively well but recognize recurring patterns they do not fully understand. They may repeatedly find themselves in the same kinds of relationships, struggle with perfectionism or self-criticism, feel disconnected despite outward success, or know intellectually what they "should" do without understanding why change remains so difficult.

For these clients, reducing symptoms may be only part of the work.

Depth-oriented and insight-based psychotherapy explores the emotional, relational, and psychological patterns that influence how people experience themselves and others. Greater insight can create opportunities to respond differently rather than automatically repeating familiar patterns.

This emphasis on depth is an important part of Houston Therapy's clinical identity, but it does not mean therapy has to be abstract or unstructured. Many of our clinicians combine deeper exploratory work with practical strategies and evidence-based interventions.

Founded by Dr. Daniel Katz

Houston Therapy was founded by Daniel Katz, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, college mental health, substance use treatment, psychiatric care, career counseling, and other clinical settings.

Dr. Katz earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Wright Institute in Berkeley, California and completed an APA-accredited doctoral internship at Pennsylvania State University's Counseling and Psychological Services. His advanced training includes psychoanalytic training through the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston.

He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Houston Psychological Association and is a member of several professional psychological and psychoanalytic organizations.

Dr. Katz founded Houston Therapy with the goal of creating a practice where clinicians with different areas of expertise could provide sophisticated, individualized care while continuing to learn from one another.

That collaborative philosophy remains an important part of the practice today.

Finding the Right Therapist Matters

Research and clinical experience both point to something important: the quality of the therapeutic relationship matters.

A therapist can have excellent credentials and still not be the right therapist for every person.

Because Houston Therapy is a group practice, our intake coordinator can help you identify clinicians whose specialties, therapeutic style, availability, and experience may fit what you are looking for.

You do not need to know your diagnosis or which type of therapy you need before contacting us. Tell us what has been going on and what you would like help with, and we can help you determine an appropriate next step.

Every Houston Therapy clinician offers a free 15-minute phone consultation so you can ask questions and get a sense of whether the therapist feels like a good fit.
