Does Houston Therapy Accept Insurance?

Houston Therapy does not bill insurance directly. We are a private-pay, out-of-network practice.

Payment is made directly to Houston Therapy at the time of service. If your health insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement from your insurance company.

We can provide documentation, commonly called a superbill, that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

Reimbursement depends on your individual insurance plan and cannot be guaranteed.

Why Houston Therapy Is a Private-Pay Practice

We have chosen to work outside of insurance networks so that treatment decisions can remain primarily between you and your therapist.

Insurance coverage may depend on factors such as diagnosis, medical necessity requirements, deductibles, authorizations, session limits, and other plan-specific rules. By operating as a private-pay practice, our clinicians have greater flexibility to individualize the frequency, length, focus, and approach to treatment based on each client's needs.

This also allows us to offer specialized and longer-form services that may not fit neatly within the structure of every insurance plan.

We recognize that private-pay therapy represents a significant financial commitment. That is one reason we make our fees available in advance, offer free consultations, and provide documentation for clients who would like to use their out-of-network benefits.

Using Out-of-Network Insurance Benefits for Therapy

Many health insurance plans, particularly some PPO plans, include benefits for services provided by an out-of-network therapist or psychologist.

If your plan includes out-of-network mental health coverage, your insurance company may reimburse you for a portion of the cost after you meet any applicable deductible.

The amount reimbursed varies considerably from one insurance plan to another.

Houston Therapy cannot determine or guarantee how much your insurance company will reimburse. We recommend checking your benefits directly with your insurer before beginning treatment if reimbursement will be important to you.

What Is a Superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt for health care services that you have paid for.

It typically includes information an insurance company may require to process an out-of-network claim, such as:

  • Dates of service

  • Type of service and billing code

  • Diagnosis information

  • Amount paid

  • Your clinician's credentials and license information

  • National Provider Identifier (NPI)

You can submit the superbill to your insurance company according to its out-of-network claim procedures.

Your insurance company then determines whether the service qualifies for reimbursement and how much it will reimburse under your specific plan.

How to Check Your Out-of-Network Mental Health Benefits

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

  1. Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?

  2. What is my out-of-network deductible?

  3. How much of my deductible have I already met this year?

  4. After I meet my deductible, how does my plan calculate reimbursement for out-of-network psychotherapy?

  5. Is there a limit on the number of therapy sessions covered each year?

  6. Do I need preauthorization or a referral?

  7. How do I submit a superbill or out-of-network claim?

  8. Is there a deadline for submitting claims?

It can also be helpful to write down the name of the representative, the date of the call, and any reference number provided for the conversation.

Insurance benefits and reimbursement policies can be complicated, so getting this information directly from your insurance company can help you understand what your actual out-of-pocket cost may be.

Payment for Therapy & Psychological Services

Payment is due at the time of service.

Houston Therapy accepts major credit and debit cards. HSA and FSA funds may also be used for eligible psychotherapy and psychological assessment services.

A payment method is kept securely on file through our client portal and charged according to our payment policy.

Houston Therapy does not participate with commercial insurance plans and does not accept Medicare or Medicaid.

Good Faith Estimates

Under the federal No Surprises Act, individuals who do not have health insurance or who choose not to use their insurance to pay for care have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the expected cost of scheduled health care services.

A Good Faith Estimate explains the expected charges associated with your care.

You may request a Good Faith Estimate from Houston Therapy before scheduling or at any time during treatment.

If your final bill is at least $400 more than the amount listed on your Good Faith Estimate, you may be eligible to use the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

For additional information about your rights under the No Surprises Act, visit CMS.gov.

You may also contact Houston Therapy at 713-936-2561 with questions about the anticipated cost of your services.

Cancellation & Missed Appointments

We understand that schedules change and that illness and unexpected circumstances happen.

Houston Therapy requires advance notice when cancelling or rescheduling an appointment. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged according to the cancellation policy reviewed with you when treatment begins.

Because missed appointments are not clinical services, cancellation and missed-appointment fees are generally not eligible for insurance reimbursement.

If you need to change an appointment, please contact your therapist as soon as possible.
